Emotional Benefits

Yoga helps children to develop respect for their bodies and a strong and healthy sense of self. Balancing postures and breathing techniques are highly effective in improving concentration. Children are taught to relax. They enjoy learning and practising postures that help them self – calm. This in turn reduces anxiety, panic and depression and supports the children with techniques for anger management.

An important effect of stretching and relaxation techniques is better quality sleep.

PSHE, Citizenship & Self Esteem

Yoga is totally inclusive, because postures can be modified to suit all, allowing the children, including those with learning and emotional needs, to feel successful and increase their self –esteem. The way in which Yoga is taught to the children also encourages them to consider social and moral dilemmas and to feel positive about themselves, and ultimately take more responsibility for their actions The yoga inspires the positive values of optimism, persistence and self-worth.

Well-Being

Children love the postures and are thrilled to see their own progress. They realise that they can do it to the best of their ability irrespective of shape, weight or culture. The effect of stretching and exercising makes them feel good about their bodies. They enjoy the stillness, quiet and calm of relaxation at the end of each session, during which time they can relax and reflect. There are always opportunities for genuine praise for the children, which they relish.
