Course Overview

Course Aim

The Main aim of the course is to give you the skills, knowledge and confidence to teach yoga at the highest standard to children in mainstream primary and special needs schools.You will learn how to teach yoga using approaches and methods that fully engage children , are great fun, are educational and help children to develop respect for their bodies and a strong and healthy sense of self.

Course Content

The depth and diversity of the course will enable you to design safe, effective and progressive courses for a range of primary school ages and abilities. In addition you will deepen your understanding and sensitivity as to the reasons for disruptive behaviour and develop effective classroom management skills. You will explore methods of safely adapting classic yoga postures to suit the abilities and age range of children and learn how to plan and develop activities that enhance pupil’s awareness of breath.

At the core of the course will be your developing understanding and expertise in teaching children with special needs including Autistic Spectrum Disorders, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Emotional Behavioural Difficulties (EBD). Significantly you will explore the concept of self - esteem and learn how children’s self esteem is enhanced through the teaching of yoga. Throughout the course you will be encouraged to develop your creative skills and teaching style and to set the lessons in the context of the national curriculum

In school training, as well as at the centre, will help you quickly build confidence and expertise in the type of environment in which you will be working. You will benefit greatly from working alongside one of the finest children's yoga teachers in the UK today. Assessments are designed to be practical and vocational, as well as challenging and interesting. They will include presentations, proposals, case studies and major written assignments.

Are you a suitable applicant?

Applications are welcomed from Primary and Secondary Teachers, Health Workers with experience of childcare, experienced Nursery Nurses, Special Needs specialists and, of course, from established yoga practitioners and teachers. All applicants need minimum two years yoga experience and must be able to demonstrate evidence of personal practice. Your ability to work empathically and creatively with children is more important than a teaching qualification in yoga.

Each training group will be a rich mixture of people from the yoga world and education professionals, who share equally the passion of teaching yoga to children in schools, and who will undoubtedly benefit from the sharing of expertise, the pooling of knowledge and experience, and the cross-fertilization of their skills.

Successful applicants will be asked to submit an Enhanced Disclosure Form to the CRB which ensures that you do not have a criminal record (a legal requirement when working with children.)

Insurance

It is essential that you obtain student insurance before starting the course. School Teachers may have existing insurance with respective unions and qualified yoga teachers will have insurance with their qualifying organisations. Whilst we cannot provide insurance we are happy to direct you to reputable insurers.

Health and safety

If you have a condition that may be affected by yoga practice, for example high/low blood pressure it is your responsibility to inform your course tutor. Confidentiality is respected.

Clothing

Please wear loose comfortable clothing suitable for yoga stretching.

Complaints and Appeals

Any complaints or criticisms about any aspects of the course are considered fairly. Students are encouraged to contact the course tutor at any Reasonable time to discuss any issues that may be causing distress or discomfort.

There is a formal appeals procedure for students who wish to question grading of assignments.

Home practice

Students are expected to develop their personal yoga practice. From time to time students will be asked to provide evidence of home practice as well as regular attendance of a yoga class. Up to date diaries or logs will be suitable evidence.
